Open Letter regarding the Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023
Drafted an open letter calling on the Government of New Zealand to leverage its position on the world stage and in the United Nations to advocate against the enactment of Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023 and to make special provision for LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers from Uganda. The letter sets out the bill's conflict with numerous fundamental rights guaranteed by Uganda's constitution and by international human rights treaties — including the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights — and the severe risks posed to public health efforts on HIV and other stigmatised diseases.
